I am a research associate at the National Centre for e-Social Science (NCeSS) at the University of Manchester. Within EUAsiaGrid I am responsible for workpackage 2 on Requirements and Coordination Policy Definition and the task leader for e-Social Science applications within workpackage 3 on Application Support.

My background is in computer science but I have a long-standing interest in what people actually do with computers, so I have been doing research on computer supported cooperative work, human computer interaction and participatory design. More recently, I have done research on furthering the uptake of e-Infrastructure services. As well as being involved in EUAsiaGrid, I am also project manager for the e-Uptake project and co-investigator of the eIUS project, both of which are part of the JISC Community Engagement Strand. Also, I have been a theme leader on Adoption and Sustainability of e-Research at the e-Science Institute in Edinburgh and still maintain links with the institute and the National e-Science Centre in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Through my involvement in EUAsiaGrid, I hope to further the uptake of e-Research across the globe and to make e-Social Science a part of this. At NCeSS, we have been working on the development of e-Social Science applications and have been at the heart of the development of the field. The International Conference on e-Social Science has been created by NCeSS and has been hosted in Manchester a number of times. The next conference will be hosted in my home town of Cologne! e-Social Science needs to become a truly international activity with a community spanning the globe if we want it to be sustainable and if we want social science to address pressing social issues that increasingly have dimensions transcending national and regional borders.
